  • Skype phone calls

I don't know if people are aware but you can use Skype to phone most places in the world...more importantly you can ring Thailand and the UK
For Thailand you can ring mobiles and landlines
For the UK you can just ring landlines

I have the Unlimited World Monthly which you can find info on the Skype site, it costs me under £11 per month and I definitely get my monies worth. There are no hidden charges and I find it works great.
When in Thailand Ohmmy rings her family on their mobiles most nights to save the credit on the phone and I use it daily to speak to family in the UK.
When in the UK I use it to keep in touch with Ohmmy by ringing her mobile and that is every day lol. So for me it is worth every penny.
It does use the internet same as normal Skype to Skype but it can be used well on 3G, 4G, and over decent wifi connections and I use it on my phone and Laptop.

If you all have WhatsApp it's free and better quality.

Why do people use something that costs them when there are perfectly good FREE alternatives.
It doesn't matter how "good" it is, it can't be as good as free can it!
Only took 2 and half years. Thai Air finally coughed up my 2020 cancelled flight dosh

There are not many in Thailand using Whatsapp but you can call via Facebook too. I put a tenner on Skype almost a year ago and I noticed there was £2.50 left a couple of days ago. That's with the wife ringing mobiles in Thailand. A tenner a month sounds expensive with Skype but I don't know how much it's being used.

If you have something that is free to call Landlines and mobiles then please share it....not everyone on the planet has internet or indeed knows how to use it and the apps that come with it.
So really under 11 quid a month for unlimited dialling around the world is cheap until I find out otherwise...fingers crossed I do

Is this the 5 minute argument ??

Skype I use 100%, its cheap allows conference calls video calls and is 99.99999% reliable I can share files screens for work and it also has a business edition. As for quality its adequate and normally better than adequate.

The others work as well but free or not I personally am happy to pay but each to their own.

My main point as far as Skype is concerned is that I have used less than a tenner in almost a year with Skype but I don't know how much you use it. My wife natters for an hour or so to her sisters in Thailand a couple of times a week. Skype reliability is good.

If you have Whatsapp both ends, calling is free. Obviously you need Internet. The same with Facebook calling. With Skype you can call somebody's mobile on the other side of the world.

That's absolutely the point. My wife and I can communicate with LINE (much more used here than WhatsApp) and Facebook Messenger when we both have internet. When I am in Europe and my wife goes to her village, which has no reliable internet signal, I use SKYPE. For me it is certainly worth maintaining a few pounds of credit with SKYPE for such occasions.

I also use it for telephoning DWP, HMRC, Teachers Pensions etc from Thailand.

I am not saying that me or my partner don't use internet based apps. But the thread is Phone calls (not whatsapp calls or Line calls etc) and that is what I was mentioning. Maybe mentioning Skype was confusing!

@ ash....no argument on my side, might help if the thread is read correctly though

@ rasg....we use it everyday for at least a couple of hours, both ringing in Thailand and ringing in the UK, yes the reliability is good. I might have to look at the credit side of it but due to the amount of time we use it it might be more than a tenner year

Two hours every day sounds like a deal to me unless there is something better.

I know messaging from Line is free but are video calls from it free to? Just spoke to my friend for 16 minutes and am wondering if she'll get billed for it?

Its all free apart from your internet charge.

I use LINE video chat quite a bit and have never received a charge, how can they when they have no bank or card details when creating an account.

I tried using Skype once but had problems logging in so left it. If I can use Line that is great. I guess that's why it's popular in Asia.
                              Thank you Gary.

I guess most people just buy a sim card for their UK phone when in Thailand?
