  • Fed up with paying for 087 and 084 calls? Free Option!

Came across this very useful App and website. It primarily a service for avoiding call queues but it also allows FREE calls to most 0870, 0871, 0844, 0845, 0800, 0500 and 0808 calls from your mobile (well not exactly free but from within your inclusive minutes). The service can also be used from a landline.

It’s better to be 6 feet apart than to be 6 feet under.

I found a plumbing company recently who used a 0800 number and in small print another geographical number which was described as mobile friendly.

Sorry to go off topic but why on earth do public organisations insist on using 03 numbers. The generate no income so whats the benefit.

03 numbers were introduced to replace the 0870 numbers. They serve the same purpose as 0870 (for call routing and management purposes) save that they must be charged by all telephony operators at the same rate as numbers beginning 01 and 02.

Yes indeed although I am still confused as to what public bodies achieve using 030 numbers.

I wonder how the consumer rights directive will help us poor consumers.

The idea of the 03 numbers was to allow organisations (both public and private) to have a non-geographical telephione number for the public to call. The number must be charged by all UK telephony service providers at the exact same rate as geographical 01 and 02 numbers.

What these bodies achieve is a single number that can be called from anywhere at the same charge as an 01 or 02 number. Mobile phone operators (the biggest rip-off merchants when it comes to non-geo numbers) are required to treat the 03 code in all their billing rates and promotions in exactly the same way they treat 01 and 02 numbers. You will never pay more for an 03 call from any UK telephone service provider than you would for a 01 or 02 call.

For the company using the 03 number they have the benefit of a single number, a number that can be routed to several (even many!) different terminating telephones anywhere in the world according to demand or the location of the caller.

If a company changes location chooses to move their PSTN telephone service to a different service provider they maintain their 03 number. If there are faults with the public PSTN (01/02) numbers then the termination of the 03 can be switched swiftly to ensure calls are not lost.

There are really many benefits for the business/organisations that use these numbers.
