21st February 2008 |
วันมาฆบูชา Takes place on the full moon of the third lunar month. Commemorates the day Lord Buddha recited the "Ovadha Patimokkha" (Fundamental Teaching) to his disciples. |
19th May 2008 |
วันวิสาขบูชาTakes place on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 6th lunar month. Commemorates Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death (Parinibbana). |
17th July 2008 |
วันอาสาฬหบูชาAlso called "Dhamma Day", it takes place on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 8th lunar month . Commemorates the day on which Lord Buddha delivered his first Sermon to his five disciples. |
18th July 2008 |
วันเข้าพรรษาTaking place on the first day of the waning moon in the 8th lunar month. The first day of the three month long Buddhist Lent, a retreat from the rains (the Vassa). |
14th October 2008 |
วันออกพรรษMarking the end of the rains (the Vassa). |
12th November 2008 |
วันออกพรรษา เริ่มกฐินกาลMarking the end of the four week Kathin ceremony, when the rivers and canals are full of water, the Loy Krathong Festival takes place on the full moon night of the twelfth Lunar month. People bring bowls made of leaves containing flowers, candles and incense sticks, and float them in the water. As they go, all bad luck is supposed to float away with them. |
