It's just been announced that Implementation of the new English language requirement for migrant spouses/partners intending to settle in the UK will begin on 29th November 2010.

After that date anybody applying for any type of settlement visa will have to pass a basic English test first.
There's going to be a rush of applications before then so expect waiting times to increase dramatically.
Well done for posting that i best get a move on
Sean and Bee
So yet again they are trotting out this terrible excuseSo why do they only care about non-European spouses being able to integrate and broaden their opportunities. Ridiculous!Speaking English promotes integration into British society and broadens opportunities. The new rules will help ensure that migrant spouses are able to participate in British life from the outset and integrate more easily into wider UK society.
And have you noticed the bottom paragraphI wonder what this is going to entail? We are reviewing English language requirements across the immigration system with a view to tightening the rules further in the future.
Seems like the UK legislation is causing a knock on effect elsewhere, in repurcussion it looks like the English speakers in the UK will now need to sit a 4 hour English test for a Canadian settlement visa this will be over 2 sittings and will involve a colleague from Reading having to travel to Birmingham to sit the second part. Unconfirmed, but just what I have gathered from a conversation earlier today.
I still think it is a good idea though, but also think on Health and Safety reasons it should be a prerequisite for the EU zone too.
Further caps?
We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.
So if anyone is in any doubt and debating when to go for a visa, DO IT NOW.
Gary, there are many places in the UK at the moment where noone speaks english at all. These ghettos simply serve to promote racism and the people in the ghetto do not identify with English customs. These become a breeding ground for extremist views and even suicide bombers.
I have no problem with people coming to the UK to live but they MUST be prepared to integrate into our society and follow our rules, many immigrants in the past do not do so.
The same with visiting thailand, anybody who refuses to stand for the King when visiting a cinema will not get any sympathy from me.
Immigrants need to integrate into our society otherwise we will end up with an us and them scenario, and the biggest hurdle to that is speaking English. It is nigh on impossible to integrate if you do not speak the language.
As for European spouses, we are governed by european rules that allow these people to come here, live and work without having to conform to our immigration requirements, if you do not like that then I would suggest that you vote to leave the EEC if and when we ever have a referendum
Peter you obviously haven't read any of my other posts on subjects similar to this so will not realise the sarcasm in the post. Believe me I totally agree with what you have said.
As for the EEC (EU) believe me if ever we are ever actually allowed to vote on what is (was) such a major decision then I will definitely vote to leave it, no question about it. Then we would be able to rectify some of the most ridiculous laws that have been forced upon us by the stupid idiots in Brussels. And get our borders back.
Sorry Gary, been out of touch for the lasts 6 months, enjoying los too much I guess.
I agree that the major immigration problem we have in this country is the massive influx of europeans who suddenly have the right to live and work in the UK. So yes, I would also vote to leave the EEC and regain the right to control our own borders
No worries, I had read you had been over there for a while, you lucky so and so (this infraction business is killing me).
Hope you have voted in the EU in/out poll.
